Breath of Peace series, Part 2 · Glenda Mays Shaw
Grab your coffee, friend. Let's talk about the loneliest part of anxiety.
Anxiety whispers that you are alone. Fear insists no one understands. But the Holy Spirit steps into that exact space. He doesn't come with a theory. He comes with His presence. (This continues your series that began with Break Free from Anxiety Through the Power of the Holy Spirit.)
More Than a Comforter
Before Jesus went to the cross, He made His friends a promise:
"And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever." (John 14:16, NKJV)
The Greek word behind "Helper" is Paraclete. There's no perfect English word for it. It means Comforter, Counselor, Helper, Advocate and Encourager, all at once. It means "one called alongside."
Notice the word another. Jesus was saying, "Someone just like Me is coming." The Spirit is not a lesser stand-in. He is Jesus' own presence, now living in you, not just beside you.
So much of our anxiety grows from feeling alone. We feel unsafe, unheard, unsupported. The Paraclete answers that. When panic rises, He isn't watching from far away. He is right there in the moment with you.
When You Have No Words
Have you ever been so anxious you couldn't pray? You open your mouth and nothing comes. Here is good news for that moment:
"Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." (Romans 8:26, NKJV)
The Spirit doesn't lecture you out of fear. He doesn't shame you for being afraid. Instead, He groans alongside you and carries your tangled, wordless panic to the Father as a perfect prayer.
Eloquent words aren't required. You can simply say, "Spirit, I have no words—You know. Pray for me." Then rest, because He is already praying.
He Brings the Right Verse
Jesus also said the Spirit would remind us of what He taught (John 14:26). That means the verses you tuck away now, He can bring back to you later, right when you need them.
Here's one worth keeping close:
"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." (Isaiah 41:10, NIV)
When your mind spins, read it out loud. Yet this isn't magic. It's inviting the Spirit to use His own Word to steady you.
The Comforter Who Stays
Go back to that first verse. Jesus said the Spirit would stay forever.
People who comfort us eventually get tired. They leave, or they misunderstand. The Holy Spirit never does. He isn't annoyed by fears that keep coming back. He isn't impatient with slow progress.
You are never too anxious for Him to stay. He doesn't pull away when you panic. Instead, He draws nearer.
Your Step This Week
Make a "Comforter card." On an index card, write two things:
- "Holy Spirit, You are my Helper. You are here."
- Isaiah 41:10.
Keep it in your purse, by your coffee maker or on your nightstand. When anxiety hits, read both lines out loud, slowly. Let His presence, not the feeling of being alone, have the last word.
Let's Talk
Is there a fear you feel you have to beat before the Spirit can help you? Bring it to Him now. He's already there.
I'd love to hear from you in the comments. And if you know someone who feels alone in their anxiety, please share this with them. They need to know they have a Helper too. You can also take my free Holy Spirit Connection Style quiz if you'd like a next step with Him.
